Why You Should Have Crane and Hoist Inspections Performed on Your Equipment

Workplace Safety

Ensuring the safety and efficiency of your industrial operations is critical, and regular crane and hoist inspections are essential in achieving this. At Harriman Material Handling, we understand the importance of maintaining your equipment to the highest standards. Here’s why regular inspections are crucial and how our thorough inspection processes can benefit your business.

Importance of Regular Inspections

Enhancing Safety
Safety is a non-negotiable aspect of any industrial operation. Regular inspections help identify and rectify potential hazards such as worn-out components or faulty mechanisms, ensuring a safer working environment for your team. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of accidents and injuries, fostering a culture of safety within your organization.

Optimizing Efficiency
Efficiency in operations is key to maintaining productivity and profitability. Regular inspections help minimize unexpected equipment failures, keeping your production lines running smoothly with minimal interruptions. By maintaining your equipment in top condition, you ensure optimal performance and reduce the likelihood of costly breakdowns.

Proactive Maintenance
Routine inspections enable early detection of wear and tear, allowing you to address issues before they escalate into major problems. This proactive maintenance approach extends the lifespan of your equipment, saves on repair costs, and ensures more predictable budgeting. Regular inspections act as an early warning system, alerting you to potential problems before they become serious.

Types of Inspections

At Harriman Material Handling, we offer two main types of inspections to meet your maintenance needs: frequent inspections and periodic inspections.

Frequent Inspections

Performed month-to-month, frequent inspections ensure that your equipment remains in compliance with OSHA Regulations 1910.179 for Overhead and Gantry Cranes, as well as the appropriate ANSI/ASME Standards. Our technicians will:

  • Inspect and test the hoists, trolleys, and cranes for proper operation.
  • Visually examine the sheaves, drums, and wheels.
  • Check the hoist cable or chain for kinking, crushing, cutting, or corrosion.
  • Ensure the hoist reeving is correct.
  • Inspect end stops, bumpers, and rail sweeps.
  • Check the hoist, trolley, and crane control units for proper operation.
  • Examine the hooks for wear, bends, and cracks, and ensure safety devices are intact.
  • Inspect and test safety devices such as lights, horns, and limit switches.
  • Examine the condition of the pendant station.

Periodic Inspections

Performed annually, periodic inspections provide a comprehensive assessment of your lifting units, in accordance with OSHA Regulations 1910.179 and the appropriate ANSI/ASME Standards. Our service technicians will:

  • Inspect and test the hoists, trolleys, and cranes for proper operation.
  • Inspect the motor brakes for proper operation.
  • Visually examine the sheaves, drums, wheels, and bearings.
  • Check the hoist cable or chain for kinking, crushing, cutting, or corrosion.
  • Ensure the hoist reeving is correct.
  • Inspect end stops, bumpers, and rail sweeps.
  • Check collector shoes, brushes, and wheels for signs of arcing and wear.
  • Inspect external motor couplings and wiring for wear and deterioration.
  • Visually check electrical control enclosures for broken or loose connections and proper operation.
  • Check the hoist, trolley, and crane control units for proper operation.
  • Examine hooks for wear, bends, and cracks, and ensure safety devices are intact.

At the completion of the service, our technicians will discuss the results of the inspection with the appropriate representatives of your organization and provide a written report for each lifting system.
